The article reflects the result of the analysis of concretizing designations used in the era of integration of the North Caucasus with Russia in the second half of the XIX – early XX century. Their application under the conditions of that time was a kind of source of information that allowed us to draw certain conclusions about the state and directions of the convergence process that was taking place. The replacement of existing semantic representations leads to a decrease in the reliability of retrospective reproductions, and sometimes to the assumption of distortions. Succinct definitions of historical realities when used for scientific purposes are usually called concepts or categories.
In research, they become a kind of concepts that contain a certain meaning inferred under specific conditions. Thus, without them it is impossible not only to ensure the objectivity of the presentation, but also to convey the color that actually existed. However, the concepts that were once widespread, eventually went out of circulation as the changes occurred, which can be traced to the results of the integration process of the North Caucasus with Russia. Accordingly, they cannot be displayed for reconstructions in other periods. It should be noted that concepts act as conventions that serve as a kind of reference plots when recreating sections of the past.
